Handling the Writer's Lifestyle and a Full Time Job

Updated: Aug 26, 2023

We are all very busy these days. We are cramming as much as possible into a 24-hr. day and expecting to have personal time and relationships as well. Productive, healthy days take intent and focus. How do we create this lifestyle as working writers? We are juggling family, work, and trying to eke out a modicum of personal time.

There are so many ways we become distracted.

Planning the Day

For a few years now, I've been scheduling time to write faithfully throughout the week and on weekends. I am single, I haven't allowed dating relationships to become a focus. Maybe you have to make time for a relationship. That's okay. My writer's lifestyle has been focused on writing for a health blog and writing chapters in my current unfinished books. I do have a formula that I've followed consistently.

I am up at 4 am to 4:30 am every morning. I like to write at coffee shops in the morning. I have two favorite spots right now, a Starbucks that opens at 5 am and a local coffee shop that opens at 6 am. By 7:30 am I am at work for 8 hrs. I might add, I love my workplace. I am a lucky girl. Then, I have the afternoon for personal time or friends. On the weekend, it's writing at coffee shops and time with family.

I've noticed, I have the ability to go from project to project without allowing the last project to filter into my new time. That's what you need to do to be successful if you are a working writer. You cannot bring one project into the next and have clear focus, unless they are tied to each other in some way. I think it is a conscious choice I make. I've also noticed that the projects stay fresh when you let them rest and breath while you work on the next thing.

These are just my thoughts on having a successful writer's lifestyle and finishing a book.

Happy Writing
