Words of Wisdom: A Journey Through the Writing Process

Writer: Melissa SaulnierMelissa Saulnier

Open book and authenticity

I worked with songwriters from 2004 to 2016; that's 12 years. I saw many who would pour money into creating albums that unfortunately didn’t sell because they weren’t well-known yet or they tried to sing on their album and they weren't really singers. From firsthand experience, I realized the importance of having a reality check and a structured writing process. Jumping straight from being an inexperienced singer/songwriter/musician to making it big in Nashville usually doesn’t work. It’s crucial to practice writing, whether songwriting or book writing. If you have the financial resources, you can hire a studio or publisher and someone to help with marketing. But what if you don’t have money?

In my opinion, this makes the process more genuine. You have to learn the ropes and progress gradually. This takes patience. When our writing reaches a high standard, we are more prepared to achieve success, and people are more likely to know who we are.

So, what is that book writing process, and why should we be patient and learn for ourselves?

The Book Writing Process:

  1. Idea Generation: Start by brainstorming and capturing your ideas. This could be a plot, a character, or a concept that excites you.

  2. Research: Depending on your genre, research can add depth and authenticity to your writing. For fiction, this might involve understanding your setting. For non-fiction, gather all the facts and references you'll need.

  3. Outlining: Create an outline of your book. This will serve as a roadmap, helping you stay focused and organized as you write.

  4. Writing: Begin your first draft. Don’t worry about perfection—just get your story down on paper.

  5. Revising and Editing: Once your first draft is complete, revise and edit your work. This involves refining your prose, fixing plot holes, and ensuring consistency.

  6. Feedback: Share your manuscript with beta readers or a writing group to get feedback. Use their insights to make further improvements.

  7. Polishing: Make final adjustments to your manuscript. This may involve a professional editor to ensure your book is polished and ready for publication.

  8. Publishing: Decide whether you want to self-publish or seek a traditional publishing deal. Each path has its own set of steps and considerations.

  9. Marketing: Promote your book through various channels. This could include social media, book signings, and collaborating with other authors.

Why Patience Matters:

  1. Skill Development: Writing is a skill that improves with practice. Taking your time allows you to hone your craft and produce higher-quality work.

  2. Authenticity: A gradual process helps you find your unique voice and style, making your writing more genuine and relatable.

  3. Resilience: The journey of writing and publishing a book teaches resilience and perseverance, qualities that are essential for long-term success.

  4. Growth: Each step of the process offers opportunities for personal and professional growth, making you a more seasoned and capable writer.

By embracing the process and being patient, you set yourself up for a more meaningful and rewarding writing journey.

Happy writing!
